My mother, Dolores was always an avid sewist and as a young teacher in the 50’s, made all her work clothes. My earliest memory of her sewing is working diligently on a treadle machine to make clothes for our first day of school. Over the years she made dresses for countless weddings and special occasions. She always admired the art of quilting but raising 9 children on a farm left her little time to indulge in this passion. It wasn’t until she was in her mid 60’s that she sought out the local quilt guild and quickly mastered many advanced techniques. Over the next 22 years she endowed each of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren with her beautiful work. She spent the last year of her life in a long term care facility that generously carved out a space for her sewing machine. She continued her craft making a lap quilt each month until she passed away at the age of 88, with quilt blocks ready to be assembled on her table. Quilting is a passion that allows each and every one of us fellow quilters to pass on memories that last a lifetime. We certainly will always cherish what she has passed on to us.

I can remember my grandmother, Helen, was always crafting. Whether she was crocheting, sewing, quilting or doing applique work, her hands were always busy. She started sewing clothes for her family in the 60's - pants and shirts for my grandfather, fortrel suits for my uncles and dresses for my mother, among many other items. Living in a small farming community nothing ever went to waste and even when her sons grew out of their suits, she would cut them up and turn them into tied quilts. Through the 70's she learned the art of quilting and over the years has won many awards at quilt shows for her exceptional work. The quilt shown below took her over 660 hours to complete, with the maroon binding hand made, sewn on and completely hand quilted (amazing huh?!). Although I did not learn how to sew and quilt directly from my grandmother, I will always hold dear the items she may one day pass down and hope to one day be able to pass on a legacy to my own daughter.

This sweet, spunky little girl has the privilege to be named after both these women. Miss Cadence Dolores Louise (aka Dolly Lou). If you happen to be wondering where we came up with our company name - there it is! She's a constant light to our lives and part of the drive behind what we're doing.
